The University of South Carolina has admitted to 5 major NCAA violations and 5 minor infractions committed from 1999 to 2002 in a report prepared jointly by the NCAA enforcement staff and the university. The team was guided at the time by legendary coach Lou Holtz, who retired after last year.

Investigators found violations occurred when prospective student-athletes were given tutoring sessions and offseason workouts. In addition, the Gamecocks were found to have a lack of institutional control. The school proposed 2 years of probation, a reduction from 56 to 50 paid campus visits for football recruits for 2005-06 and 2006-07, as well as a loss of 2 football scholarships for the '06-'07 and '07-'08 academic years.

This report has been forwarded to the NCAA's Committee on Infractions. The committe can accept, reject or modify any proposed penalties. Steve Spurrier, who replaced Holtz, says he hopes the NCAA will accept the penalties, "which I believe are fair, so that we can get this matter behind us."
