The Southern Missisippi Golden Eagles have lost their leading rusher from last season. FB Anthony Harris who was the teams leading rusher last season with 714 yards and 5 touchdowns last year, has left the team. Harris, along with senior LB Naton Stewart, quit the team for undisclosed reasons.

Southern Mississippi also lost roving defensive back Darrell Bennett and LB Kenneth Boley. Both were dismissed for violating team policies. Bennett, who had 70 tackles (2 for a loss) last season, was also a projected starter in the secondary.

Two more players will also miss the season opener against Tulane on September 4th. Star kick return specialist John Eubanks, who also starts at corner, as well as backup tight end Pedi Causey have been suspended from the team for the season opener against Tulane for violating team rules. Eubanks averaged 29.4 yards on kick returns last year, including a 97-yard touchdown return against Houston.

The Golden Eagles have now lost four players for the season and two for the opener. These losses are definitely big, especially when you consider that they were only returning 11 total starters to begin with. These losses may affect Southern Mississippi's bid to win the Conference USA. The offensive line should remain fairly solid though and tough QB Dustin Almond will have some talented receivers to connect with. Their first real test will be when they roll in to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama the second week of the season.
