The Urban Meyer era begins for the Florida Gators in 2005 and the fans could not be happier. Former head coach Ron Zook didn't do a horrible job, but a loss to cellar dweller Mississippi State and a loss in the Cocktail party didn't sit well with Gator faithful. Meyer comes off a Cinderella season where he took the Utah Utes to a Fiesta Bowl win over Pitt. He finds himself inheriting a very talented team in Gainesville this season.

The offense returns seven starters and that includes star QB Chris Leak. Leak threw for 3197 yards and 29 TDs last year and will look to carry that momentum into 2005. RB Ciatrick Fason and WR OJ Small were both tops at their positions but departed in the off-season. However, RB DeShawn Wynn and WR Andre Caldwell are as talented, if not more. The offensive line is very experienced and should be among the tops in the SEC.

Last year the Florida Gators defense ranked 42nd overall and gave up an average of 142 yards per game on the ground. This year's version returns 8 starters including top tackler Brandon Siler.

If the Gators want a shot at a game in Atlanta (that's not the Peach Bowl) they will have to prove it in week 3 against Tennessee. Urban Meyer has all the tools you need to not only win the SEC, but win the National Title as well. The real question will be how the Florida Gators adapt to Meyer's new schemes. If the players get the schemes down quickly this could be a squad you see in the Rose Bowl.
