The Clemson Tigers defeated the Maryland Terrapins 28-24. The final score did not accurately reflect just how close Clemson came to losing this game.

The Tigers trailed 24-14 after three quarters of play, and then the comeback began. With 8:28 left in the game, Charlie Whitehurst took the Tigers 86 yards in five plays and narrowed the deficit to three points. In that drive, he went deep and connected with WR Curtis Baham for a 51 yard score. On the ensuing drive, with less than six minutes left, the Clemson Tigers would score again. This time, it was Junior RB Reggie Merriweather who broke a 38 yard run for a touchdown. Whitehurst finished with 177-yards on 17 of 21 attempts and two touchdowns. Merriweather completed the day with 75 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns. His counterpart, Freshman RB James Davis, also contributed to the ground game recording 82-yards on 20 attempts. On the receiving end, Curtis Baham finished with 2 receptions for 57-yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Terrapins struggled to establish a productive rushing attack. Running back Mario Merrills, who ran for a career-high 149 yards in the opener against Navy, was limited to 21 yards on 15 carries. Entering the fourth quarter, he had 3 yards on 11 attempts. Sam Hollenbach went 18 of 28 for 288 yards and two touchdowns for Maryland. His main target was Vernon Davis, who had six catches for 140 yards and a touchdown.
