3rd ranked Michigan was upset by 20th ranked Notre Dame 17-10 on Saturday at the Big House. This was the Wolverines' first home loss to the Irish since 1993.

Sophomore QB Chad Henne had a better day – at least on paper – than his Notre Dame counterpart, but couldn't come up with a final-drive miracle for the win. Henne was 19-of-44 for 223 yards and one touchdown, but he also threw an interception and had a costly fumble in the Irish end zone that Notre Dame recovered for six points.

For a majority of the game, the Irish defense was simply too much for Michigan's offense to handle. The Wolverines were stymied in the red zone on three separate occasions, and were held to their lowest point total since 2002. The loss of RB Mike Hart to injury early in the first quarter didn't help much, but freshman Kevin Grady stepped up and gained 79 yards on 18 carries. Senior WR Jason Avant also had a good day with 5 catches for 90 yards.

Michigan's defense can't be faulted for this loss. They held the Irish to a scant 244 total yards for the game and had several key stops early on. In addition, the defense kept the Wolverines in the game by giving up only 3 second-half points.

The Michigan Wolverines will host Eastern Michigan next week in an intrastate matchup.
