Things went from bad to worse on Saturday afternoon in Ames, Iowa after quarterback Drew Tate was intercepted in the second quarter of the Hawkeyes 23-3 loss to in-state rival Iowa State. After his pass was picked off by Steve Paris, he ran up in an attempt to make a tackle, but was knocked out of the game with a concussion for his trouble; he never returned to the game.

His replacement, junior Jason Manson, was unable to lead Iowa with any sort of effectiveness. He finished 10-of 31 for only 118 yards, but the biggest blow came when LaMarcus Hicks picked him off and ran it back 27-yards for a touchdown to give Iowa State a 16-0 lead right before halftime. The Iowa Hawkeyes never recovered.

The lone offensive bright spot for the Iowa Hawkeyes was sophomore running back Albert Young who gained 138 yards on 18 carries. That individual effort was offset by the team's inability to sustain drives. In addition, the Hawkeyes turned the ball over five times. Their only points came on a 44-yard Kyle Schlicher field goal early in the 3rd quarter to cut the lead to 16-3.
