New Florida Gators football coach Urban Meyer and veteran Gator QB Chris Leak were finally on the same page Saturday afternoon -- and by halftime, they had closed the book on the Kentucky Wildcats.

Leak, increasingly at ease in the high-powered spread offense Meyer brought from Utah, threw for 319 yards and four touchdowns in the first half, giving the visiting, fifth-ranked Gators a 49-7 bulge at intermission.

The home team had actually scored first, when a blocked punt by Jacob Tamme set up Rafael Little's 1-yard touchdown run. But Leak, distributing the football like Joe Montana, came back with a vengeance, throwing touchdown passes to DeShawn Wynn, Chad Jackson (9 catches, 105 yards), Jemalle Cornelius (8 catches, 138 yards) and Dallas Baker. Wynn was also finding holes in the Wildcats at ground level, dashing for three more scores.

Kentucky backup QB Curtis Pulley, a true freshman, scored twice in the fourth quarter against Florida reserves to make the score semi-respectable. It was the Gators' 19th straight victory over the Wildcats, and left them 4-0, 2-0 in the Southeastern Conference. Kentucky slipped to 1-3 and 0-1.

Earl Everett led the Florida Gators defense with two interceptions of Wildcats starting QB Andre Woodson. Kentucky managed only 65 total yards in the first half.
