The Virginia Tech Hokies football team and its fans partied like it was 1999 after demolishing Georgia Tech 51-7.

99' was the year the Hokies, led by QB Michael Vick, made it to the BCS title game before losing to Florida State. And the most emphatic statement Frank Beamer's team made during that regular season was a 62-0 rout of Syracuse when Tech was ranked fourth and the Orange 15th.

Fast forward to Saturday's game with visiting -- and 15th-ranked -- Georgia Tech. Fourth-ranked once again, the Hokies made another powerful statement, swamping the visiting Yellow Jackets 51-7.

As usual, Virginia Tech did it as much with defense as offense. TE Jeff King not only caught a touchdown pass from Vick (no, Michael graduated -- this was younger brother Marcus), but blocked a Tech field goal attempt in the second quarter that D.J. Parker scooped up and ran 75 yards to score.

Then, late in the third quarter with Virginia Tech leading "only" 31-7, the Hokies went on a run that completely eviscerated the Georgia visitors. Yellow Jacket QB Reggie Ball, obviously off his game after being hospitalized last week with viral meningitis, had just thrown a touchdown pass to big-play wide receiver Calvin Johnson and was trying to rev up a comeback. Except that Hokies LB Xavier Adibi stepped in front of an under thrown Ball pass and took it 25 yards to score, covering the last four yards in a full-length swan dive.

On the first play after the kickoff, Ball went to the air again. This time, Virginia Tech DE Chris Ellis intercepted the pass and bolted 29 yards up the sideline to the end zone. In a span of 17 seconds, Tech had scored 14 points. Chan Gailey's team was a rambling wreck, and Ball exited soon afterward.

Vick, a junior, had his best game in a Virginia Tech Hokies uniform, throwing for 222 yards and the touchdown to King. Mike Imoh and Cedric Humes scored Hokie touchdowns to go along with the "Beamerball" points. Meanwhile, the Hokie defense held Georgia Tech to just six first downs.
