Parting, wrote the Bard, is such sweet sorrow.

On Saturday afternoon in Morgantown, the final game of the long-running
series between West Virginia and Virginia Tech was sorrowful for the
Mountaineers but a sweet one for the Hokies. The Hokies won the contest 34-17.

It wasn't easy though. The undefeated yet unranked West Virginia Mountaineers hung tough with the third-ranked Hokies most of the way in a game that wasn't truly decided
until Cedric Humes' 4-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter. The difference
turned out to be the chillingly efficient play of Tech QB Marcus Vick, who
completed 15 of 17 passes for 178 yards with two touchdowns and ran for 70
yards on the ground, including a 10-yard scoring scamper in the first quarter.

A few years ago, it was Michael Vick who burned the Mountaineers at home.
Saturday it was his little brother, who left school last season after
several run-ins with the law, only to be reinstated on a conditional basis.

The Virginia Tech Hokies grabbed an early 10-0 lead on Vick's run and a Brandon Pace field goal, but West Virginia cut it to 10-7 on a short TD pass from Pat White to Mike
Villagrana. White, supposedly the running quarterback to Adam Bednarik's
passer in Rich Rodriguez's two-quarterback scheme, also hit Dorrell Jalloh
with a 46-yard strike with five minutes left in the second quarter to keep
the game close.

However, Vick once again demonstrated his new-found maturity, making it 24-14 at
halftime with a 15-yard pass to speedy Eddie Royal. Except for
Humes' run, the teams only traded field goals thereafter.

Tech moved to 5-0 with the victory, while West Virginia slipped to 4-1. Thus
ends a long and contentious series, with no clue as to when or if it will
be renewed.
