The Penn State Nittany Lions defense held Minnesota's standout running back Lawrence Maroney in check, a season low 48 yards, while Tony Hunt and Derrick Williams combined for 226 yards on 39 carries to lift the Nittany Lions to 44-14 blowout victory over the 18th ranked Golden Gophers.

Maroney, who came into this game as a top Heisman candidate, could hardly find running room as Penn State stacked the line eight deep and dared quarterback Bryan Cupito to try to beat them passing the ball. Cupito went 16-of-28 for 177 yards, but 49 of that was on a touchdown pass to Ernest Wheelwright before the half to cut the Penn State lead to 20-7. He was also intercepted once.

Legendary coach Joe Paterno's team was the one who ran wild, as they exploded for 370 yards led by Hunt and Williams. They each rushed for two touchdowns, with Williams' scores coming in the first half and Hunt icing the game with his two second half scores.

As the clock ticked away, along with the Minnesota Golden Gophers undefeated record, chants of “overrated" reigned down from the sold out crowd of 106,000+ at Happy Valley.
