Tommy Tubberville and the Auburn Tigers improved their SEC record to 2-0
this evening after their 48-7 domination of the South Carolina
Gamecocks. The Tigers could do no wrong and seemed to have the
Gamecocks out-manned in all aspects of the game.

The South Carolina Gamecocks didn't even manage to move the ball into Tigers territory
until late in the fourth quarter. The Auburn defense had no trouble
shutting down the one dimensional Gamecocks pass attack with the backup
quarterback Antonio Heffner taking the snaps while injured starter Blake
Mitchell held the bench down. On the day the Gamecocks managed only 128
yards passing and 69 yards on the ground.

The Auburn offense was a model of perfection and consistency, however, they didn't pile up huge numbers due to the fact that most of their drives started in Gamecocks territory.
Sophomore quarterback Brandon Cox threw for 245 yards and a touchdown
while completing 19 of 29 pass attempts. Kenny Irons, Auburn's starting
halfback who transferred from South Carolina only managed 28 yards on 12
carries while freshman Brad Lester hit up the South Carolina defense for 52
yards on 12 carries.

While the Tigers yardage wasn't staggering, they still managed to hand
Steve Spurrier one of the worst defeats of his career. The Tiger
faithful would have loved to see a shutout, but the touchdown that South
Carolina did get was late in the game against mostly second and third
string players. This one could not have gone any better for the Tigers,
who capped off a season opening five game home stand and will hit the road
to play Arkansas in two weeks. South Carolina faces off against Kentucky next week.
