Even when the Aggies have an impressive win, they seem to lose a key ingredient to the team. Texas A&M head coach Dennis Franchione announced on Tuesday that punt returner/backup safety Jordan Chambless tore his right ACL in Saturday's win over Oklahoma State and will be lost for the rest of the year.

Chambless, a redshirt freshman, now becomes the eighth player on the Texas A&M Aggies' roster to undergo surgery this season. After originally hurting the knee in the second quarter, he continued to play, not realizing the seriousness of the injury until after the game. He has returned six punts for 77 yards on the year, a 12.8 average.

Another freshman, Devin Gregg, will most likely take Chambless' place on the defensive depth chart. Junior walk-on John Ray and sophomore cornerback Brock Newton are also due to see considerable more time on the field, due to this setback.

Sophomores Marquis Carpenter and Chad Schroeder are the top candidates to take over punt return duties. Franchione could also call on senior wide receiver Jason Carter, the teams leading pass catcher with 29 receptions, as he has returned kicks in the past.

Chambless is also a standout pitcher on the Texas A&M Aggies' baseball team, where he is considered a pro prospect. It is not clear at this time how his current injury will affect his future as a two-sport athlete.
