It was supposed to be a great, close, offensively charged game. It was supposed to be one heck of a shootout, both teams scoring at will against the other teams somewhat porous defense. It was supposed to be a lot of things. The Michigan State Spartans didn't get the memo.

Northwestern came and did what they expected to do, racking up 49 points. Michigan State seemed to forget the fundamentals of football, turning the ball over numerous times and putting up only 14 points, in a devastating loss that all but eliminates the Spartans from Big Ten title contention.

After a brilliant 75 yard drive to open the game, the Spartans offense did pretty much nothing. There were two interceptions in the end zone, a fumble that Northwestern returned for a touchdown, and two missed field goals, which allowed Northwestern to hold onto a 21-7 lead going into half time. Could the Spartans rally and make this into a game?

The first drive of the second half answered that: No. The Wildcats went up 28-7, and were on cruise control for the rest of the day. Unfortunately for the Spartans, cruise control still puts up points against their defense. They ended the day with 49 points, well the Spartans, despite gaining a whopping 480 yards of offense against the 116th ranked defense, only put up 14 points. Part of that was due to Spartan QB Drew Stanton, who struggled completing 20 of 38 for 234 yards, a touchdown, and three interceptions.

This loss all but eliminates the Michigan State Spartans from Big Ten contention, as they would need a miracle for the rest of the teams to fall behind them.
