Virginia Tech Hokies senior defensive end Darryl Tapp has been named one of five finalists for the 2005 Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award. Tapp made first team all-ACC last season. This season he has 32 total tackles, including 5 sacks and 6 tackles for loss. Tapp is an athletic defensive end known for his speed. He has a constant motor, and is a good tackler. Tapp often plays in the backfield as he gets a great jump off the snap. Other finalists for the award are Elvis Dumervil of Louisville, Willie Evans of Mississippi St., Tamba Hali from Penn State, Mathias Kiwanuka from Boston College, and Ryan Neill of Rutgers.

Tapp is also up for another award. He is a semifinalist for the Lott Award, which honors college football's defensive impact player of the year. The Lott Award judges players' on and off the field performance. David Pollack, a defensive end from Georgia, who now plays for the Cincinnati Bengals in the NFL, received the award last year.

Virginia Tech senior linebacker James Anderson is a finalist for the Wuerffel Trophy, which is awarded to a college football player that best combines exemplary community service with outstanding academic and athletic achievement. Anderson has 62 tackles this season, 7 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, and 1 interception.

The Wuerffel Trophy is named after former college football and NFL quarterback Danny Wuerffel, who was and is a big contributor to charity and community service. Recently the former Heisman Trophy winner received national recognition for his community efforts.
