Quarterback Drew Olson had a monster game tonight, throwing for 510 yards and 5 touchdowns as the UCLA Bruins overpowered the Arizona State Sun Devils by a score of 45-35. The Bruins are now 9-1 on the season, while the Sun Devils fall to 5-5.

Olson came out firing right from the start. On the Bruins' very first play from scrimmage, he hit wide receiver Joe Cowan for a 91-yard touchdown. In the Bruins' second series, Olson connected with Chris Markey for a 56-yard score, and it was clear that he was just getting warmed up. Olson would finish the game 22-of-27 for 510 yards, yielding an incredible 18.9 yards per attempt average. Five of his completions were for 40 yards or more.

Three UCLA receivers had 100-yard games. Mercedes Lewis led the way with 7 receptions for 108 yards and 2 TDs. Markey ended up with 3 catches for 120 yards and a score, while Cowan chipped in 3 grabs for 109 yards plus a touchdown.

Running back Maurice Drew also contributed to a UCLA offense that put 660 total yards on the board, rushing for 88 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.

Arizona State managed to hang with the Bruins through the first half of play. Trailing 14-0, QB Rudy Carpenter led the Sun Devils on an eight-play 79-yard drive that was capped off by a 2-yard touchdown run from Keegan Herring. UCLA scored on their next possession, then Arizona State came right back and returned the favor on an 8-yard run from Chad Christensen. Another score for each side had the game knotted up at 28 going into the break.

But then UCLA outscored the Sun Devils 17-7 in the second half en route to victory.

Carpenter finished with 27 completions for 334 yards and 3 TDs, while Herring ended the day with 129 rushing yards. Wide receiver Derek Hagan caught seven passes for 97 yards, giving him 249 receptions in his career – a Pac-10 record.

Next up: The UCLA Bruins don't play again until their showdown with USC on December 3. Arizona State will have a week off before playing rival Arizona in their season finale on November 25.
