In a hotly contested Pac-10 battle, the 11th-ranked Oregon Ducks traveled to Pullman to face the struggling Washington State Cougars. Oregon, riding the arm of backup quarterbacks Brady Leaf and Dennis Dixon, escaped with a narrow 3-point victory thanks to a last-second field goal to remain in second place in the Pac-10.

The Oregon Ducks found themselves down by 11 points in the third quarter. They responded by scoring three unanswered touchdowns to take the lead. Washington State, who had lost 6 straight conference games coming into Saturday night's contest, refused to roll over and tied the game late in the fourth quarter. Cougars' quarterback Alex Brink found Troy Bienemann in the end zone for a 3-yard scoring strike. Loren Langley later tied the game with a 45-yard boot. During the game, Washington State running back Jerome Harrison broke the Cougars' single-season rushing yards record set by Rueben Mays.

Oregon plays Oregon State next week in the annual Civil War game, while Washington State will play Washington in the Apple Cup game. Final score: Oregon 34, Washington State 31.
