Bragging rights are not the only thing up for grabs this Saturday when Virginia Tech and Virginia face off against one another. The Virginia Tech Hokies (8-1) head to Harrison Field at Scott Stadium to battle the rival Virginia Cavaliers (6-3) in the Battle for the Commonwealth Cup this Saturday at noon on ESPN.

The Commonwealth Cup was created in 1996 by the two schools, and is held in possession by the winner of the game each year. The Cup is four feet high and weighs over 100 pounds. It is made of marble and cherry wood. The top is silver plated and contains the names of each team. Every single score from the previous 86 meetings are engraved on the sides. The front of the trophy contains a map of the commonwealth of Virginia with Blacksburg and Charlottesville marked.

Virginia Tech first possessed the trophy after defeating Virginia 26-9 in 1996. Virginia was able to take it and keep it for two years beating the Hokies in 1997 and 1998. Virginia Tech behind quarterback Michael Vick won the Commonwealth Cup back in 1999 and retained it until a loss in 2003. A 24-10 Hokies victory last season returned the Cup back to Blacksburg.

This is the second time this season the Virginia Tech Hokies will play a game coming off of a bye. The extra week of preparation should help after the humiliating defeated suffered at the hands of the Miami Hurricanes on November 5th. In the Hokies previous game coming off a bye, they won easily against the Maryland Terrapins by a score of 28-9. Conversely the Virginia Cavaliers are coming off a 27-17 victory over Georgia Tech.

This week's game should be a battle, as both teams always leave it on the field against each other. Who will come away with the Commonwealth Cup this season? We'll find out soon enough.
