Since taking over the head coaching position at his alma mater, Virginia Tech Hokies head coach Frank Beamer has built a winning tradition. In this his 19th season as the head coach of the Hokies, Beamer has posted an impressive 143-78-2 record, has 14 winning seasons, 12 consecutive winning seasons, and this season will be the 12th consecutive bowl game appearance for the Hokies. Beamer ranks third in wins among active coaches.

When Beamer took over the head coaching job in 1987, he had hoped to build a program that would reach a sustained level of excellence. He has done a great job, after posting consecutive losing seasons in his first two seasons at the helm, (2-9) and (3-8) respectively, Beamer has had only one other losing season.

While the Hokies were in the Big East Conference, Beamer led them to three conference titles and an appearance in the National Championship Game in 1999. Over a six season span the Hokies spent a remarkable 61 weeks in the Top 10 of the AP Poll. He was national coach of the year in 1999, Big East Conference coach of the year in 1995, 1996, and 1999, and ACC coach of the year last year in his first year in the league.

Beamer is widely known as great special teams coach and a great motivator. He is also known for getting the most out of his talent. Each season teams that play the Hokies know to expect a tough battle, where the Hokies will play great defense and tremendous special teams. There aren't many coaches that have had the success or ever will have the success that Beamer has had. In 1997 he became the winningest coach in Virginia Tech history. Once Beamer wins the big game he will go down as one of the greatest coaches ever. This week, based on coaching alone, Virginia Tech should beat Al Groh's Virginia Cavaliers.
