I spent a little time on a couple of Texas A&M fan message boards the other day, wondering what the folks faithfully bleed Aggies maroon and white think about their squad's chances of upsetting #2 Texas next week. Well, it didn't take me too long to take the temperature in the room; Texas A&M fans have already posted next year's schedule and speculation about head coach Dennis Franchione's firing date.

With the impending departure of quarterback Reggie McNeal at season's end, the forum crowd are at least thankful the team opens up 2006 with three "cupcakes" as they break in a new field general; The Citadel, Army, and the men from Troy (thankfully I'm not talking about USC).

However, the fact remains that if Franchione doesn't reverse Texas A&M's recent history and if they end up losing two out of three of the "big ones" (Texas Tech, Texas, and Oklahoma) in 2006 those who aren't already calling for his head will undoubtedly be wanting to run him out of College Station. It won't matter how many overmatched teams they beat up on in September.

This brings us back to the game no one is giving the Aggies a chance in, the match-up with the Longhorns a week from now. Though unlikely, a victory here could pull Franchione and the rest of his coaching staff out of the Texas A&M doghouse and into the penthouse until their fourth game of next season, when this 3-0 team opens Big 12 play at home against what should be once again a lethal Texas Tech Red Raiders squad on September 30th.
