The 81st East-West Shrine game comes this year from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. This will mark only the second time the contest is played outside of San Francisco, California. The West team is coached by Texas A&M's Dennis Franchione, while the East will be led by Arkansas' Houston Nutt.

This year's tilt has Reggie McNeal (Texas A&M) at quarterback for the West. He will be joined by fellow Aggies WR Jason Carter, DL Johnny Jolly, and S Jaxson Appel. In total, 15 players from the West squad and 5 from the East are originally from the Lone Star state. The backfield will feature Taurean Henderson (Texas Tech), who set the NCAA record for most receptions by RB (303). WR Mike Hass (Oregon State) led the country in receiving yards (1,532) and receiving yards per game (139.27).

The East team features Bruce Gradkowski (Toledo) at QB; Wali Lundy (Virginia) and Leon Washington (FSU) at RB; Greg Jennings (Western Michigan) and a pair of Wisconsin receivers (Jonathan Orr and Brandon Williams). Jennings was the second in the nation in receiving yards per game (114.45). The East will also feature a couple of Miami Hurricanes (Rashad Butler and Roger “Rocky" McIntosh).

The Shrine game is the only postseason college football exhibition that includes players from Canada on both sides. WR Andy Fantuz (Western Ontario) will represent the East while DL Daniel Federkeil (Calgary) is suiting up for the West.

Recent versions of this annual classic have featured players such as Tom Brady, Tedy Bruschi, Steve Smith, Jake Plummer, and Antwaan Randle El.
