The Big 12 Conference named Dan Beebe as commissioner today, nearly two months after assuming the job in an interim role.

Beebe replaces Kevin Weiberg, who held the post for nine years but left to take a job with the Big Ten Network earlier this summer.

When asked about the possibility of the Big 12 Conference starting up its own television network, Beebe said, "It is something we have explored in great detail--the idea of a Big 12 TV Channel, like what the Big Ten Conference has established. We intend to pay particular attention to opportunities like this on an ongoing basis, but it's too premature yet to move in that direction."

Beebe, who had been the Big 12's chief operating officer and senior associate commissioner since 2003, previously served 14 years in the executive offices of the Ohio Valley Conference. He agreed to a five-year contract.

"My experience as a conference leader will help take the Big 12 to the next level of success from a competitive and financial standpoint," Beebe said.

Beebe says he will bring a transparent style of leadership to the position. He is confident of his ability to lead the conference and address the issues that are of greatest importance to the Big 12.

He declined to discuss revenue sharing issues that have been speculated around the conference since Weiberg's departure, indicating that such topics would only be discussed in private within the conference structure.

Big 12 Conference officials acknowledged that the Big 12 is a young conference--only 11 years old--and that it presents a certain set of challenges as well as special opportunities in the future.
