After a preliminary hearing Wednesday, Boulder County judge John Stavely approved the assault case against Colorado tight end Riar Geer to proceed to trial. Geer is accused of breaking one person’s jaw and knocking out another’s tooth during a melee at University Hill in March.

While playing injured during much of last season, the then-sophomore totaled 14 catches for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Geer was slated to start in 2008.

Head coach Dan Hawkins temporarily suspended Geer from the team in March.

COMMENTARY: Colorado’s problems appear to have no end in sight; linebacker commitment Lynn Katoa’s legal troubles is also in the middle of legal troubles. Until the Buffs’ off-field troubles disappear, it will be difficult for Colorado to consistently improve.
