Flashbacks can frighten. Colorado wants no part of the past when it plays Eastern Washington this weekend.

Commentary: The Buffs face their first FCS (formerly known as Division I-AA) opponent since opening with Montana State in 2006. In coach Dan Hawkins’ debut, Colorado fell to the Bobcats 19-10, a game Mike Finger of the San Antonio Express-News ranks as the third-worst nonconference defeat in Big XII history.

Tackle George Hypolite, the defensive team’s leader, an All-Big XII first-teamer, and Colorado’s unquestioned quote machine, believes that loss resulted from a lack of preparation, and the Buffaloes never recovered from the shock. The Buffs finished the 2006 season with a 2-10 mark.

“It’s almost surreal when you look and back and think about it,” he said. “They (Montana State) prepared like it was their Super Bowl, and they walked right in here and hit us in the mouth and kept going.”

After seeing Eastern Washington, the nation’s No. 7 school in the ESPN-TSN FCS poll, hang tough with Texas Tech last weekend, Buff players recognize the Eagles as a worthy foe. They don’t want to endure another embarrassment after starting the season with a solid 38-17 win over in-state rival Colorado State.

“I think now everybody treats people with respect,” said quarterback Cody Hawkins, who watched the Montana State contest from the sidelines during his redshirt season. “(Two years ago) They thought we were going to go in and pound a bunch of people without really putting in the work.”

Fan Pulse: The Montana State debacle still raises shivers among Buffs partisans, but most see another FCS upset as unlikely. Check out this link for more fan observations - http://www.ralphiereport.com/2008/9/3/606752/woke-up-with-chills-this-m.

Injury watch: Colorado faces Eastern Washington with a healthy roster. However, Hawkins indefinitely suspended offensive lineman Ethan Adkins after being cited for driving under the influence on Monday. He also suspended starting guard Devin Head for one game for an undisclosed violation of team rules.
