After further examination this morning, New York Giants team doctors said that quarterback Eli Manning has sprained his right elbow. Head coach Tom Coughlin is taking precautions with his prized player, declaring him week to week, and sitting him out of this Friday night's game against the New York Jets. Backup Tim Hasselbeck will start in Manning's place.

Manning was injured in the second quarter of Saturday night's game when he was hit on the elbow by Carolina Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers as Peppers stripped the ball away, pickup up the fumble and ran it back for a touchdown. Manning stayed in the game for the next drive and threw a 41 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Amani Toomer. He told coaches that his elbow was bothering him and he was sent back to the locker room to have it looked at. The New York Giants went on to win the game 27-21.

Eli Manning was the no #1 overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. Another former top overall pick, Tim Couch, visited the team earlier on Saturday in hopes of getting back into the NFL. Couch was released by the Green Bay Packers before the 2004 season after failing to make the final cut.

The Giants were already in the market for a veteran backup before the injury to Manning. This latest turn of events could be the clincher that will bring Couch into the fold.
