The Indianapolis Colts will replace their AstroTurf playing surface with FieldTurf in 2005. The Colts' RCA Dome had been ranked as one of the NFL's worst fields.

Colts president Bill Polian made the announcement 2 days after the St. Louis Rams made a similar commitment to improve the quality of fake grass in their home venue.

Indianapolis and St. Louis were voted the league's worst fields in a survey of about 1,500 players by the NFL Players Association made public in February. The RCA Dome and the Rams' Edward Jones Dome were the only 2 stadiums that had AstroTurf as of 2004.

The old synthetic carpet has less padding, more awkward seams and typically increased the chances for injury. Furthermore, FieldTurf looks and feels more like grass.
