Maybe the University of Connecticut learned something form the Rich Rodriguez/West Virginia debacle.

The school released details this week of a new deal for football coach Randy Edsall. Signed and sealed on Feb. 14, it will give the 10th-year Huskies coach an average of $1.5 million a year over the next five seasons. It also offers an extra month's salary if UConn plays in a bowl game, $100,000 if it's a BCS game. In addition, Edsall gets a car allowance, a family membership at a country club and tickets to UConn men's and women's basketball games.

At the same time, however, the contract is very specific about what happens if he decides to fly this comfortable coop. If Edsall takes another job before Dec. 31, 2008, he'll have to pay the school $1.5 million. That amount descends on a sliding scale until 2012.

This is, of course, of little value as far as keeping Edsall in Storrs -- should his Huskies continue to improve and make him an even hotter commodity, the school that hires him would probably be glad to cough up the buyout money. The point is, UConn won't get left holding an empty bag.

Edsall had a flirtation with Georgia Tech after his team went 9-4 in 2007 and played in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, which probably prompted the Tech offer.

Something to keep an eye on, though -- Edsall is a Syracuse grad and has reportedly said he would love to go back and coach at his alma mater. And if the Orange doesn't dramatically improve this year, Greg Robinson will be out the door.
