The top recruiting services have all labeled Malik Generett as a "sleeper." Apparently, the University of Connecticut woke him up.

Last Friday, the 6-foot-5, 205-pound quarterback-turned-wide receiver from William Penn High School in York, Pa., made a verbal commitment to the Huskies, and William Penn coach Matt Ortega gave UConn's Randy Edsall a lot of the credit.

"The big names will be out there," Ortega told the York Daily Record, "but we know Malik's going to get the support and guidance and the true father figure from Randy that some of our other guys haven't gotten in college.

"That's what Malik needs most."

Generett apparently agreed.

"Coach Edsall is like Coach Ortega, always talking about your grades and making sure you mature and become a better person," he said. "I thought about waiting, but I didn't want to pass this up."

In Storrs, Generett would be reunited with his former bodyguard. 2008 William Penn grad Zach Zielinski, all 6-9, 330 pounds of him, plans to enroll at Connecticut this fall and try out for the team as a walk-on offensive lineman. Huskies senior William Beatty, a starting offensive tackle, is also from William Penn.

Edsall has his own roots in York, meanwhile, having grown up and played high school football nearby before accepting a scholarship to Syracuse University.

After switching to wide receiver (a UConn problem area last season) three games into last season, Generett finished with 21 receptions for 420 yards and four TDs. Besides his length, he has been clocked at 4.5 over 40 yards.

He joins Bristol, Conn., running back Marcus Aiken, Seymour, Conn., linebacker Mike Oseiki and QB Leon Kinnard of Baltimore as having verbally committed to the 2009 Huskies.
