The University of Connecticut football team got a double shot of bad news this week.

First came word that redshirt freshman defensive tackle Jarrell Miller -- quite possibly the most highly touted player ever recruited by the Huskies -- was leaving school.

Miller, out of the Richmond, Va., suburb of Highland Springs, was a Parade All-America linebacker and his team's most valuable player in the 2005 All-America Bowl. After signing with North Carolina and taking a summer school course there, he withdrew and enrolled at Fork Union Academy in Virginia, then de-committed from the Tar Heels after John Bunting left as coach and and signed with Connecticut, which redshirted him last season.

According to several newspaper reports, Miller encountered academic difficulties at UConn. He also grew out of the linebacker position, weighing around 250, and had been shifted to defensive tackle to back up Rob Lunn and Alex Polito.

The Huskies may also have lost another key backup for part of the 2008 season -- free safety Aaron Bagsby, who underwent knee surgery this week. Bagsby was scheduled to be first off the bench in relief of Robert Vaughn.
