Last season was a bit of a drama-filled mess for the Dallas Cowboys. They were preseason Super Bowl favorites by nearly every media pundit out there and they turned in one of the most dissapointing seasons in the NFL. They struggled with injuries to Tony Romo and both of their highly touted running backs along the way. However, even with all of that, they had a chance to make the playoffs with a win in the final week of the season. Even then they couldn't deliver and got blown out by the Philadelphia Eagles. This season, it's all about turning things around for the franchise. They're hoping that they can benefit from "addition-by-subtraction" this season. It's not really about who they picked up in the offseason. It's more about who they got rid of.

Several key players from years past are now gone and the Cowboys are hoping that a culture change will benefit them in a big way. The biggest move was cutting ties with flamboyant receiver Terrell Owens. His actions were considered disruptive last year and the team imploded down the stretch. Many believed that he was the cause for the team's troubles. While there is no doubt he was a nuisance, he was still one of the most productive receivers in the game. This season, there are question marks around who will step into T.O.'S old role.

Now that T.O. is gone, Tony Romo can concentrate on spreading the ball around again like he has done so well in the past. This is truly Romo's style anyway instead of having to focus on a particular player. He can just get the ball to the open man and move the ball down the field again.

Besides T.O. the Cowboys also cut ties with a few other veteran players this offseason. Pro Bowl safety Roy Williams was released as well as Zach Thomas, Tank Johnson, Chris Canty, Pacman Jones, and Greg Ellis. Many of these players helped make the Dallas Cowboys defense what it was and they are now relying on younger players to fill the void.

Although they lost a lot of players, they are also getting some important players back. Starting tailback Marion Barber returns after an injury-plagued year last season. They're also going to get their first round pick from last year, Felix Jones, back from injury. Jones is a dynamic return man and runner out of the backfield. He has the capability to take it to the house any time he touches the ball. Both of these players will add a lot to the offense this season.

Overall, the Dallas Cowboys should be a better team than they were last year. While the loss of the veteran players will hurt a little at first, they have enough talent to overcome the loss. Having the two runningbacks again will help immensely and a healthy Tony Romo will make the offense go again. They should have an explosive offense as well as a decent defense. Expect the Cowboys to challenge in the AFC East this year.
