Keith Davis: bad luck (and bullet) magnet

So, you're Dallas Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells on Sunday morning. Probably just tucking into your second breakfast, perhaps feeling momentarily secure enough in your guys' chances this year to go an extra round of golf today, only to receive a phone call informing you that young safety Keith Davis had been shot.

You're the Tuna: What are your thoughts at that point? How about something like, "Keith Davis? Isn't Davis the guy who received two bullet wounds in 2003? Isn't Davis the guy I made an example of because I wanted 'some pretty good citizens around here'?" If you're Parcells, you may just have been starting to believe the hype pumped out by Cowboys PR calling Davis the "comeback story of the year in 2004."

Heck, Coach, you were probably impressed by his four interceptions and 65 tackles with the NFL Europe's Berlin Thunder in spring 2004. You gave him a third strike, after all, putting him on special teams where he performed admirably--15 starts, a club-leading 16 special teams tackles. You might even have been thinking that the 2006 Cowboys were looking at least solid-ish at the safety position. Now what?

When waiving Davis in 2003, you yourself stated to media that you were doing so in spite of the fact that Davis may have had nothing directly to do with the shooting. What are you thinking right now, Coach? That Davis may be a trouble magnet not worth your time?

So, you're Keith Davis on Monday afternoon. Sure, it's great to be home and gee, you're lucky the bullets that hit your head and thigh were nothing serious. You may be thinking similar thoughts to those you had after the topless bar incident: "I really am blessed just to be here," you said then. And what else are you thinking? Are you thinking it'll be difficult to sleep tonight, pain-killers or no, waiting for the bad news from an agent? Are you considering a career in which you battled from waivers to a possible starting safety spot for the only team you ever wanted to play for? Maybe it was all a case of bad luck; thus far only you know for sure, Mr. Davis. If that's so, are you maybe thinking someone has it in for you at this point?

So, you're a Dallas sports talk radio host waking up on Monday. I know what you're thinking: Today's show just wrote itself, after you rework a couple of old punch lines. You also may be thinking you'll study up a bit on fifth-round safety Pat Watkins.

And if you're the football fan--first and foremost, you've got to be asking yourself why you even open this section of the newspaper. Davis' story is just another tick on the media rap sheet, more offseason silliness making for a sports page oftentimes more bullet-riddled than three or four Bruce Willis films. You may even be wondering what the over/under is on Davis' release date. And, of course, you've got to be watching just how the Tuna will deal with his first personnel crisis of 2006.

Do you think T.O. is considering how he might swipe back the limelight?
