Historically on the last NFL cut day, every team releases players that cause their fan base to collectively gasp. This past Saturday, the Dallas Cowboys were no different. With no disrespect to Matt Baker or Montavious Stanley (both should land on the practice squad), here were the four shockers:

Rob Petitti

The Petitti cut was the biggest surprise of all. During mini-camp, Bill Parcells raved about Petitti's improvement. So with Flozell Adams' slow recovery from knee surgery, it not only appeared that Petitti would make the final roster, but that he had a legitimate chance to start.

The optimism concerning Petitti was short lived, however. The first sign that something was amiss was a comment Parcells made about Petitti's performance in the first preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. "He still struggles technically from time to time," the head coach said.

Then with the emergence of rookie Pat McQuistan and the solid performance of Marc Colombo, it basically came down to two players, Petitti and Jason Fabini, battling over one roster spot. The fact that the 32-year-old Fabini was retained over the 24-year-old Petitti meant that either the Dallas Cowboys didn't want to eat Fabini's $1.6 million signing bonus or that Petitti wasn't any good - my hunch being the latter.

Skyler Green

I wasn't sure if Tuna's constant public criticism of the fourth-round pick was just a ploy to motivate him (a proven Parcells tactic). It obviously wasn't. Green simply didn't show enough in the return game to justify a roster spot.

Rocky Boiman

Boiman's release is a surprise if for no other reason, the Cowboys had to eat his $1 million signing bonus. Sure a broken thumb in camp didn't help. But with plenty of depth at linebacker including the controversial move of Greg Ellis to the position and the drafting of Bobby Carpenter, the bigger question is why they signed Boiman in the first place.

Terrance Copper

A few weeks ago if you would have told me that the Dallas Cowboys would keep Jamaica Rector, Sam Hurd and Miles Austin and cut Copper loose, I would have sent you for the same drug test that Marcus Coleman took.

But Rector had two stellar performances in the final pair of preseason games, catching 15 balls for 173 yards.

Then there's Hurd, who Parcells had criticized for poor receiving technique which resulted in dropped balls. With his roster spot on the line, Hurd came up huge with a six-catch, 110-yard game in the preseason finale against the Minnesota Vikings.

And finally there's Austin, whose performance on special teams and potential as a wide receiver made Copper expendable in Tuna's eyes.

Other cuts: QB Matt Baker, G D'Anthony Batiste, WR Damarius Bilbo, DE Stephen Bowen, TE Tony Curtis, LB Junior Glymph, RB Keylon Kincade, S Willie Pile, OT Dennis Roland and C Matthew Tarullo.
