Fans of the Miami Dolphins find themselves in an unfamiliar position. Their collective imagination is free to fly in any and all directions. From a purely psychological and sociological perspective, it’s quite fascinating to see just how many varied opinions have surfaced regarding the first overall pick.

Here’s a sampling of recent threads over at the popular fan forum, finheaven.com:
“The unofficial draft Darren McFadden thread”
“Why C Long makes no sense / J Long makes some sense / M Ryan makes most sense”
“USA Today – Dorsey’s Pro Day”
“Do you expect a real curve ball at #1?”

There are clearly a lot of players on the fan radar, but interestingly enough, it appears that for every mainstream option, there’s a strong contingent of opposition.

Darren McFadden? We don’t need another stinking running back and he runs too upright. Chris Long? He’s a ‘tweener that’s too small to play defensive end and too immobile to play linebacker in a 3-4 alignment. Jake Long? His feet are too slow and he’ll probably end up being a right tackle. Matt Ryan? He throws too many interceptions and couldn’t throw a pretty spiral at pro day. Glenn Dorsey? He’s not big enough to play nose tackle and has too many injury issues.

So what’s a self-respecting Dolphins fan to do?

A small contingent has pinned their hopes and aspirations on Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston. Though a bit of a dark horse for first overall pick honors, Gholston’s workouts have bordered on legendary and he seems to possess all of the intangibles that make for a memorable NFL career. Like Chris Long, Gholston is a bit of a ‘tweener, measuring in at 6-foot-3 and 266 pounds. However, unlike Long, Gholston seems more well-suited to play outside linebacker because of his overall athleticism.

Do I have Gholston pegged for that first pick of the 2008 NFL Draft? Not really. For all I know, Parcells and Co. are working out the final details of a trade that will move them out of that first position.

In the meantime, I’ll just kick back and enjoy the flights of imagination that a 1-15 campaign has afforded the South Florida faithful.
