For a program that has had quite a history of losing as of late, it is very important for Bill Parcells and his head coach Tony Sparano to develop and establish a particular identity for the new Miami Dolphins. The previous Dolphins teams have been a laughing stock and have not been viewed as substantial opponents around the NFL. In order for this image to change and to regain the strong fan base that has always surrounding Miami football, Parcells and Sparano have a lot of work to do.

The major tell-tale signs will be the final results of the upcoming NFL draft. The Dolphins have already begun to establish contract negotiations with Jake Long, so this is a pre-gone conclusion that Long will go to Miami with the #1 overall pick. This will help bring a highly talented athletic player to help solidify a struggling 2007 Miami defense.

The team has already signed a strong group of free agents to help in a number of positions, but still lacks actual depth and talent at defensive back, a key position in the 3-4 defense that Sparano is likely to run in 2008. Currently, the team is a strong group of free agent individuals and lacks a strong sense of unity and identity for the Miami fans to connect with. This is crucial when the large portion of athletes will be free agents and draft picks.

Parcells has taken the right avenue by cutting players that simply cannot help the cause in Miami, but there is still a lot of work done. In 2008 there is little hope that Miami will be an immediate contender; miracles just do not happen every day of course. However, be on the lookout for Sparano to emphasize a strong offense that can move the chains and a defense that can stop the chains. Also be on the lookout for big plays made against the Dolphins and a lack of offensive production at the inauguration of the season.

These are the unfortunate effects of a young team of individuals trying to come together. Most of the high powered offenses and shut-out defenses across the NFL have been playing together for quite some time with a new addition from time to time. Miami is looking at a nearly complete over hall of the 2007 roster and must take the 2008 season to establish the team’s identity and the future course of the team.

This identity is up to Parcells and Sparano to agree upon and implement, but without this identity the team will continue to be young and with a lack of direction. The Miami fans will continue to be disenfranchised with the Dolphins if they do not see a logical direction from the team in 2008. Identity is everything.
