On Saturday, the Miami Dolphins signed running back Jesse Chatman. Chatman had spent the last three years with the San Diego Chargers but was released by the team on July 26. The 25-year-old played in 41 games, all in a reserve role, during his tenure with the Chargers. He rushed for 428 yards on 79 carries with three touchdowns. Chatman also caught 10 passes for 115 yards and had six kick returns for a 20-yard average.

His best year came last season when he played in 15 games and rushed for 392 yards on 65 carries and had three touchdowns. Against the Jacksonville Jaguars last year, he rushed for 103 yards on 11 carries and scored a touchdown.

Head coach Nick Saban said the Dolphins signed Chatman for his familiarity with offensive line coach Hudson Houck, when both were in San Diego.

In other news, it seems that rookie linebacker Channing Crowder may start the season opener. The Miami Dolphins' third round draft pick has been impressive so far this preseason. It is believed that Crowder may start at the strong-side linebacker position, where Donnie Spragan had started this preseason.

No official statement has been made by head coach Nick Saban, but a source close to the team indicates that this is a likely possibility. Crowder practiced with the first team defense on Saturday. So far, Saban has downplayed the move with the 21-year-old rookie, saying the team was preparing different alignments that might be used during the season.
