Dolphins don’t have QB controversy

There are some teams in the NFL that are still undecided on their starting quarterback as the 2008 NFL season approaches. The Arizona Cardinals and Chicago Bears are the two obvious candidates, of course.

The Miami Dolphins, meanwhile, don’t have a quarterback controversy. Rather, they have a quarterback conundrum.

A controversy means “a prolonged public dispute, debate or contention.” A conundrum means “anything that puzzles.” To have a controversy, the Dolphins actually need to have a quarterback who has proven that he deserves to start.

Josh McCown and John Beck do not a controversy make.

What has McCown done to deserve the starting nod? Well, he has bounced around the NFL since 2002 and has thrown more interceptions (40) than touchdowns (35). How has Beck proven his starting worth? Quite simply, he hasn't; in total, Beck has played five pro games and has more picks (three) than touchdowns (one). Those are hardly the numbers that create a quarterback controversy.

It seems rather silly to think that Miami fans are going to be lining up outside Dolphin Stadium with picket signs protesting the benching of McCown or Beck. That’s not to say there won’t be a quarterback controversy later in the season if the Dolphins aren’t winning and fans are clamoring for rookie Chad Henne, a second-round pick from Michigan, to get his turn under center.

The hope for the Dolphins, obviously, is that one of their passers emerges and plays well, thus grabbing the job. Until that happens, though, the team is in the midst of a QB conundrum.
