In the July 14 online edition of the Miami Herald's sports section, there was an artist’s rendering of Brett Favre on the front page. That’s not very surprising given the fact that Favre is the one and only topic of conversation in the NFL right now after the briefly retired quarterback announced that he wants to play this season.

The surprising thing about the Herald’s picture was that Favre was wearing his familiar No. 4 jersey – but it wasn’t green and yellow. Instead, Favre was pictured in a Miami Dolphins uniform with a subsequent story that had the headline: “Getting Favre Makes Sense for Dolphins.”

The author went on to explain that acquiring Favre, who is seemingly on the outs in Green Bay, makes perfect sense for a number of reasons, among them:

• Josh McCown isn’t better than Favre.
• John Beck isn’t better than Favre.
• Chad Henne isn’t better than Favre.
• The weather in Miami is easier on old bones than the weather in Green Bay.
• Disgruntled Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor could likely be swapped for Favre.

Favre, a surefire Hall of Famer, is obviously far better than McCown, Beck and Henne, having posted astounding numbers during his illustrious career. Still, Favre doesn’t make sense in Miami.

The Dolphins would definitely be much better immediately with the 38-year-old Favre behind center than with any option they currently have. The problem is that Favre is probably only a one-year quarterback option, and the rebuilding Dolphins don’t need a short-term fix; rather, they need a quarterback of the future.

No one is foolish enough to think that the Dolphins are going to win the Super Bowl this season. You don’t go from 1-15 to Super Bowl winners in a one-year span. And no matter how much Favre has left in his right arm and lively legs, he isn’t going to lead Miami to the Promised Land. Would he make them closer to 8-8 than 1-15? Most definitely.

The Dolphins, however, need to know who their quarterback of the future is going to be after this season. Whether it's McCown, Beck or Henne, the Dolphins must be able to know whom they can put their trust in to guide them on a rebuilding path that will lead to long-term relevance. That won’t happen if they rent Favre for a season.

For Dolphins fans, it would surely be interesting to see Favre in Miami in 2008. But the Dolphins don’t need fun and intrigue. They need building blocks for the future, which Favre isn't.
