In a lot of cities and towns in America, late July is all about the boys of summer and the home stretch of the baseball season. Turn on a sports talk radio station in New York, Boston and Chicago, among other places, and all you’ll here is talk of pitch counts, middle relief and run production. If you’re lucky, you might get a minute or two of football talk thrown in.

That’s not the case in South Florida.

No disrespect to the beloved Florida Marlins, who are just 1.5 games out of the National League East lead, but even they know Miami is a one-sport town. Sure, the NBA's Heat, the Marlins and even the area's hockey franchise, the lowly Florida Panthers, occasionally get their moment in the sun, but it is football that reigns supreme.

That being the case, July is an especially difficult month for self-respecting Dolphins fans. Time itself seems to slow down as the opening day of training camp approaches, reminding many of those final days of school that seemed to drag on forever prior to the start of summer recess.

On Friday, the wait will finally be over. Rookies and veterans will report to camp while opinion and speculation will finally turn into scouting and analysis.

Moreover, a lot of lingering questions will finally be answered. Is Ronnie Brown’s surgically repaired knee ready for an NFL beating? Is there a legitimate starting quarterback on the current roster? Is Ricky Williams really worthy of all the gushing praise he’s been receiving?

Perhaps the most tantalizing aspect of all is the fact that Bill Parcells is at the helm of the operation and has installed his foot soldiers at each of the key coaching and personnel positions. And once Parcells puts his stamp on a franchise, usually the only way to go is up.

Then again, coming off a 1-15 season, upward mobility seems like a given.

So enjoy those tingles of joy and emotion emanating from deep inside, Dolphins fans, because football season is about to finally descend on South Florida. For you, life is good once again.

(Author's note: I was forced to edit this piece late Sunday evening. I had "Will Jason Taylor suit up as a member of the Dolphins?" as one of the key lingering questions, but I was obviously forced to remove that passage after hearing that the Dolphins sent Taylor to the Washington Redskins.)
