The Miami Dolphins hung around for most of the game but eventually fell to the New York Jets 17-7. The Dolphins were hurt by a soft secondary and a penchant for penalties. Gus Frerotte was steady all game long but threw a late pick to seal Miami's fate.
Early on, the Miami Dolphins squandered an opportunity to stop the Jets. In the Jets first possession they were backed up into a 3rd and 15 situation but were bailed out by a Lance Schulters interference penalty. The Jets eventually found the endzone on that drive.

The Dolphins answered that drive with a sustained drive of their own, but were unable to punch in a touchdown getting the football down inside the Jets 10-yard line. A botched hold on the field goal attempt forced Olindo Mare to stutter step and miss the kick.

The Jets went into the half leading 10-0. Neither team could score points in the third quarter, but in the fourth stanza Gus Frerotte lead the Miami Dolphins on a 41-yard drive that was capped off by a 4-yard Randy McMichael touchdown grab. McMichael was the Dolphins' leading receiver with eight catches for 77 yards and a touchdown.

The Jets were able to stretch their lead to 17-7 thanks to a 10 play 80 yard drive that was capped off by a Jerald Sowell touchdown grab. The Dolphins had a few more shots to get themselves into contention but were unable to make things happen offensively. As usual, the Miami Dolphins defense was able to hold up their end of the bargain for the most part, but the offense could not put enough points on the board.

Gus Frerotte 20 of 43 for 177 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Ronnie Brown carried the ball 12 times for 35 yards.

The defense was lead by Zach Thomas and Junior Seau. Both linebackers collected 10 tackles and Seau also added a sack. Jets RB Curtis Martin was able to run the ball effectively in the first half, but was shut down in the second half. That's when Chad Pennington took over and helped his team seal the victory. Although his throws were shaky at times, he did not make any big mistakes and led his team on a pair of touchdown drives. He ended the day going 19 of 30 for 190 yards with two touchdowns.

Critical penalties were also a key contributing factor to the Dolphins downfall. Miami committed 10 penalties for 88 yards on the day.
