Will Parcells bolt under Dolphins’ new ownership?

Bill Parcells has long been a master of evaluating talent in the NFL and he confirmed that notion during his first season in Miami. Parcells orchestrated the Dolphins’ transformation from doormat of the AFC East into what looks to be a constant fixture in the division.

Parcells’ first move last offseason was bringing in general manager Jeff Ireland; he quickly followed that up by hiring Tony Sparano to be the head coach. And after the Jets kicked Chad Pennington to the curb during the summer in favor of Brett Favre, Parcells jumped at the opportunity to acquire a veteran quarterback with a history of winning.

However, with current owner Wayne Huizenga selling his majority share in the team, Dolphin fans should be holding their breath about the Big Tuna’s future in South Florida. Parcells has already gone on record stating that he’ll be sticking around, but what happens if he clashes with new owner Stephen Ross? Simply put, he leaves and collects his $12 million paycheck thanks to a handy clause in his contract.

That leaves the question: Did Huizenga turn his back on his soon-to-be-former franchise? It’s certainly possible. Bringing in Parcells gave Miami an opportunity for a quick fix, thus improving the team’s value to potential buyers. With the new owner inheriting Parcells’ contract, out clause included, he and Huizenga are both guaranteed to be big winners in this scenario.

Once the sale is final, Huizenga is off the hook for Parcells’ multimillion-dollar tab and the Big Tuna is once again free to move about the country. With several teams itching at the chance to line up for his services, Parcells could be pulling in double salary for the next couple years. Keep in mind, this will cost no compensation in the form of money or draft picks to his new employer.

While Parcells could be sincere in his comments about staying in Miami, it might be a public relations cover-up before he lands with the highest bidder. Even if Parcells does leave, he’ll part Miami after assembling a superstar tandem at head coach and general manager.

Thus, despite being a possible mercenary, Parcells has already turned around the Dolphins.
