The 2007 NFL draft was a turning point, albeit not an immediately gratifying one, for the Miami Dolphins. The choice of Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. was ridiculed by the majority of the media, particularly when golden boy Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn was still on the board.

Two years later, though, neither choice seems like a slam dunk. Quinn looked solid at times for Cleveland last season, but he still battled injury and inconsistency. Ginn, on the other hand, started showing signs of life for the AFC East champion Dolphins, catching 56 passes for 790 yards and two touchdowns. While teammates Greg Camarillo (55 receptions, 613 yards and two TDs in 11 games) and Davone Bess (54 grabs, 554 yards, one score) were arguably better than Ginn in 2008, the latter is best used as a deep option because of his speed. And quarterback Chad Pennington, who certainly had a great year, doesn't have a strong arm; that essentially neutralizes Ginn's greatest asset. Thus, it's not fair to say whether Ginn will be a game-breaking NFL receiver until his top skill can be utilized.

When the Dolphins chose Ginn ninth overall in '07 and Quinn fell to 22nd, there was little doubt in most analysts' minds that the latter would end up being the much better pick. The truth is, however, that it is too soon to judge. Both quarterback and wide receiver are positions that have big learning curves. Not everyone can be Matt Ryan or Randy Moss. Thus, let's wait a few years before declaring the victor in this battle.

For now, the team that's better off is the Dolphins -- who were playoff-bound this past season with Pennington and Ginn as the Browns, led by Derek Anderson, then Quinn, then Ken Dorsey, battled further futility.
