The Miami Dolphins re-signed veteran right tackle Vernon Carey on Friday to a six-year, $42 million deal. The move ended weeks of speculation regarding his future and Miami’s unused franchise tag, which some felt was being reserved for the 27-year-old offensive lineman. Now that it’s official, let’s talk about some of the reasons why this was a great move.

1) Continued community work – In case you didn’t know, Carey -- who grew up in Liberty City -- is a homegrown talent. For years, Carey has contributed to various community programs, getting his hands dirty and working closely with the youth in his old neighborhood. Carey probably could have continued to do this work during the offseason even if he have moved to a different NFL city, but it’s good to know that he’ll be in his hometown year-round and will be able to continue the great work that he’s been doing.

2) Draft equity – Barring a significant injury, Carey’s re-signing -- not to mention last year’s drafting of first overall pick Jake Long -- assures that Miami’s offensive tackle position is more or less set for the better part of the next decade. That means the Dolphins’ brain trust can now focus on using the team's early round picks on shoring up other key positions.

3) Continuity – Don’t forget that Carey over the past three seasons has shuffled between left and right tackle. Now that his future with the team and his position on the field are firmly set, Carey should settle back into his borderline Pro Bowl form of 2007.

4) A true changing of the guard – Finally, after years of cut-rate solutions and veteran Band-Aids, the Dolphins seem to be a team that’s serious about building a formidable offensive line. Carey’s $42 million price tag and Long’s $57.5 million deal confirm that the new brain trust believes in the old saying that you can never have too many and that you can never pay too much for a good offensive lineman.

Hopefully for Dolphins fans, they'll see a similar trend develop at the center and guard positions.
