Taylor back to Miami? Not likely, but it makes sense

Maybe we have gone into full nostalgia mode, but the release of defensive end Jason Taylor from the Washington Redskins has us wondering if there's a chance the former defensive MVP could make a return to South Florida. When you think about it, Taylor coming back to Miami makes sense; that is, if he comes in with the right attitude. Of course, his rift with front-office head Bill Parcells would have to be amended before any talks could take place.

Taylor left Miami last offseason because he wanted to play for a contender. That proved to be a mistake, though, as Taylor's Redskins missed the playoffs and the Taylor-less Dolphins went 11-5 en route to an AFC East title.

Acquiring Taylor would be a case of the Dolphins having their cake and eating it too. Not only would they increase ticket sales and get a pass rusher capable of giving opposing QBs headaches, they still have the second-round draft pick in 2009 and a sixth-round selection in 2010 from Washington that came out of the initial trade for Taylor.

Taylor's release came because he refused to agree to a contract clause demanding that he participate in 25 offseason workout days, saying that he wanted to spend time with his family. Where this attitude was when he was waltzing his way to second place on "Dancing with the Stars" last offseason, we're not sure.

Now, Taylor could work to ensure he doesn't suffer nagging injuries like he did in Washington, and repair his slightly tainted legacy in Miami by signing with the team for cheap. The latter is unlikely, of course, because Taylor has been seeing dollar signs lately, but he needs to be realistic. He isn't the player he once was. Nobody wants to remember an ineffective Taylor wearing a Redskins uniform. If he signs with Miami, he can be close to his family, give the fans who watched him grow into a star a chance to cheer for him and help the team shore up its pass rush.

Likely? No. But it makes sense.
