What’s the story with not grabbing Torry in free agency?

It seems like a foregone conclusion that the Miami Dolphins are going to take a wide receiver with one of their first four draft picks next month. No matter what receiver the Dolphins choose, it is going to take them a few seasons to adapt to the speed and schemes of the NFL. A way that Miami could make up for that transition period is by bringing in a veteran wideout. So, why aren't the Dolphins trying to get Torry Holt?

The St. Louis Rams released Holt earlier this offseason to save $8 million in cap space and some have suggested that Holt's best days are behind him. To an extent, that may be true; however, Holt still runs crisp routes and was one of the only real leaders on an awful Rams team in 2008. Holt still caught 64 passes for 796 yards last season, his worst statistical campaign since his rookie year. Amazingly, that is still better production than any receiver on the Dolphins put up last season. So, at 32 and on a pathetic offense, Holt is still better than Ted Ginn Jr. and the Dolphin crew. Unlike Marvin Harrison, another released future Hall of Famer, Holt still has something left in his tank.

Snagging Holt would also allow the Dolphins to focus their draft picks on key need areas like linebacker and cornerback. You could grab a player from both positions in the first two rounds and still be able to get someone like Oklahoma WR Juaquin Iglesias, a great route runner with solid hands. Aside from the cost, it is a win-win opportunity.

There are multiple teams pursuing Holt -- the Titans and Jaguars are two -- and the Dolphins should jump in the race.

Chad Pennington would love throwing to Holt, who would be a viable target and mentor for Miami's young receivers. If the Dolphins could convince Holt to take $5 million a season in order to play for a postseason contender, why wouldn't they pull the trigger?
