Say bye to Beck

The Miami Dolphins have already made it clear that they are looking to stockpile picks for the 2009 NFL draft. In order to get those selections, they will have to let go of players who won't contribute to their future. At this point, we can all assume that quarterback John Beck is one of those guys. The second-round pick of the Dolphins in 2007 hasn't grown into the player the team was looking for; in fact, the ex-BYU star has been more Ty Detmer than Steve Young. ESPN's John Clayton recently reported that the Dolphins are looking for "any compensation amount" to give up Beck.

Beck did nothing to help his situation in his the preseason last year, which is why Miami was so eager to bring in Chad Pennington. But Beck's lack of success isn't entirely his fault. As a rookie in 2007, he started four games for a 1-15 team that couldn't get out of its own way. You can't forgive the six fumbles he had, but you can understand how difficult it is for a rookie quarterback to play behind a porous offensive line.

If the Dolphins can get rid of Beck, they might be interested in bringing in West Virginia quarterback Pat White in the draft. Even though some teams would like to see him at wide receiver, White is insistent on staying at QB. White would be perfect lining up in Miami's "Wildcat" formation at any of the skill positions and could be the third-string QB at the same time. It's a low-risk, high-reward situation when you look at it. The Dolphins aren't getting anything out of Beck. With White, though, they could at least move him around and have an additional weapon.

As far as Beck's situation goes, a change of scenery is a must for him and the Dolphins. If they can find a taker, they'll be able to move on from a forgettable era and perhaps replace Beck with a real contributor.

No doubt Beck will be traded. The fumblitis was too apparent when he did play, and he's shorter than most would like in the NFL. ...
