While Miami's two backup quarterbacks couldn’t have more different playing styles, Chad Henne and Pat White will be striving toward the same goal in 2009: Both young signal-callers will battle to back up veteran Chad Pennington under center. The competition started during minicamp and will likely continue throughout the preseason.

Even though their days as a starter could be in the distant future, Henne and White will begin molding their games in an effort to eventually take over under center in South Florida. Henne, a second-round pick from Michigan in 2008, got a head start in the NFL, but White took the league by storm during pre-draft workouts. White, a second-rounder this year from West Virginia, was thought to be a wide receiver prospect leaving college, but his superb ability to throw the ball has been on display in recent months.

Henne is certainly more of prototypical passer and fits the mold of a Bill Parcells-type quarterback. However, the athletic ability and intangibles of White cannot be overlooked.

Before arriving in Miami, Henne was a four-year starter at Michigan. He displays an extremely strong arm and backs that up with sufficient accuracy. While Henne’s mobility is limited, he compensates with excellent awareness.

White proved to be an elusive runner during his tenure at West Virginia. His ability to buy time in the backfield makes him a dangerous weapon at quarterback. Furthermore, he’ll immediately contribute in the Dolphins’ “Wildcat” formation.

While Henne and White are both early in their development, they’ll have an opportunity to improve from simply watching each other. If Henne’s able to absorb any of White’s shiftiness, he’ll add a new dimension to his game. Likewise, if White can add zip to his passes similar to Henne, he’ll be in store for greater success in the professional ranks.

Although the competition could last for a handful of years until Pennington hangs it up, Henne and White must continue to progress and bring out the best in one another during practice. If that happens, both players will be better off when their name is finally called.

Ultimately, they’ll be only one starting quarterback in Miami’s future plans. That's to be determined, of course, but the Dolphins are counting on Henne or White to eventually take the reins in South Florida.
