Before suffering a season-ending injury in Week 13 last year, wide receiver Greg Camarillo was the Miami Dolphins’ main receiving target. Camarillo hopes to be fully healed from a torn ACL by training camp and the former special teamer will attempt to build on an unlikely climb to the top of Miami’s depth chart.

After developing into a reliable target for quarterback Chad Pennington, Camarillo’s 2008 campaign was abruptly cut short. Prior to going down with his injury, Camarillo had already compiled 55 receptions for 613 yards in just 12 games. Had he maintained that production for the entire season, Camarillo’s stat line would have totaled approximately 80 catches for 891 yards.

When Camarillo was replaced in the lineup, the Dolphins’ group of wideouts stepped up admirably. However, with Camarillo back in the mix, he’ll improve the young players around him and the Miami offense as a whole. Perhaps Camarillo’s greatest contributions came on third downs (31 of his 55 grabs moved the chains and resulted in a first down).

The Dolphins will be forced to navigate a much tougher schedule this year, and being fully staffed on the perimeter will certainly help their cause. In addition to Camarillo, receivers Ted Ginn Jr. and Davone Bess are other young wideouts continuing to progress. Camarillo and Bess are excellent possession receivers and should help the speedy Ginn stretch the field.

Also working in favor of the Dolphins’ offense is the addition of multi-talented quarterback Pat White, who will provide a tremendous amount of versatility and is expected to make an immediate impact in the “Wildcat” formation. The more potent White, Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams prove to be in the running game, the more things will open up through the air.

With several weapons now in place, Camarillo’s return will provide consistency and stability in the passing game. His ability to make tough catches and convert on third downs will bode well as the Dolphins prepare to defend their AFC East title.
