Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams has stated that he plans to end his strange NFL career after the 2010 season. Before that happens, though, Williams has to worry about his contract -- which expires after this season.

In the end, the Dolphins should send Williams off into the sunset wearing their colors. The Dolphins gave Williams a second chance and he has proven himself worthy of it, filling in admirably for Ronnie Brown when needed.

Some people knock Williams for not putting up big numbers last season, but it would have been hard for anyone to light up the stat sheet with the offensive line injuries Miami went through. Williams still almost gave 900 all-purpose yards to the offense. How much more could you ask for from him as a back splitting carries, really?

Williams said that he wanted to walk away on his own terms and you have to give him credit for that. Too many players hang on in the twilight of their careers, and it ends up damaging both their body and legacy (Brett Favre, for instance). Williams will be the first to admit that he has done more damage to his reputation than anyone else, but he has also done a lot of good. Williams has gained respect in the locker room as a hard worker and does exactly what he needs to do.

Now, the Dolphins need to make sure that he walks away wearing aqua and orange after 2010. It's a shame that he won't one day walk into the Hall of Fame in those colors, but fans will just have to settle for a good ending to what could have been a great career.
