Although current Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni has done a solid job, the addition of Romeo Crennel would bring a great deal of wisdom to South Florida. Crennel has spent several years with Dolphins front-office head Bill Parcells and could soon be roaming the sidelines as an assistant in Miami.

While Crennel’s tenure as head coach of the Cleveland Browns was nothing short of a disaster, he’s still regarded as one of the top coordinators in the game. With Pasqualoni already in place, he won’t lead the Dolphins’ defense in 2009 but could certainly have a major impact on game preparations and play-calling.

Crennel and Parcells first crossed paths over 30 years ago, uniting in the college ranks at Texas Tech. At the time, Parcells was defensive coordinator for the Red Raiders and Crennel was hired as an assistant. The two reconnected in the NFL during stints with the New York Giants, New England Patriots and New York Jets.

Not only would Crennel bring an abundance of experience, but he has extended knowledge of the AFC East. Crennel spent a total of eight years with New England and would give Miami an advantage when lining up against the Patriots twice a year.

Pasqualoni has done an admirable job with the Dolphins’ defense, but his job security could drop if Crennel joins the coaching staff. Miami ranked 15th in total defense last season, improving from 23rd in the league the prior year. However, if the Dolphins take a step back this season, Crennel could be calling the shots in 2010.

Crennel would be a welcome addition to Miami’s coaching staff, obviously; if hired, though, his time with the team could be short lived. Chances are Crennel will land a defensive coordinator position sooner than later. However, thanks to Pasqualoni’s presence, that opening might not be available in South Florida quick enough for him to stick around.
