It’s still way too early to make any definitive conclusions about the state of the 2009 Miami Dolphins. After all, they’re not even wearing pads yet. Still, there are some meaningful insights that can be gleamed from this past weekend’s activities:

Chad Pennington is supremely dedicated – Much like a workaholic within the bounds of corporate America, Pennington won’t let anything get in the way of his preparation and execution. Not even his sister’s wedding. Pennington skipped out early on his sister’s Saturday night wedding so that he could return to Davie, Fla., for Sunday morning’s 10 a.m. session. Hopefully for Miami, that dedication will translate into double-digit wins and a deep run into the postseason.

It’s tight end or bust for Ernest Wilford – Coach Tony Sparano’s admission that there’s a logjam at wide receiver means there’s no room for Wilford on that part of the roster. However, the former Virginia Tech standout is showing some ability at tight end, even catching a TD during Sunday’s red-zone drills, and continues to work on his blocking skills. Though he is still a long shot to make the team, this unexpected move could turn out to be a true blessing in disguise if Wilford blossoms into a reliable threat for tight end-reliant Pennington.

Taylor and Porter should make for a lot of fun on Sundays – Though Jason Taylor looked past his prime with the Washington Redskins in ’08, lining up opposite Joey Porter ought to facilitate his rejuvenation. And if that happens, the Dolphins’ pass rush could go from a one-trick pony to a very menacing double-sided attack.
