A quick note to anyone worrying about the recent arrest of Vontae Davis, the Miami Dolphins' first-round cornerback. Spend your time fretting about something else. Davis isn’t going to get in trouble. Why? Well, he wasn’t even the person who was arrested. Weird how that happens, huh?

Davis has asserted on his blog that he wasn’t even in Champaign, Ill., when the incident occurred during a traffic stop on June 9, a statement the Dolphins have backed up. So, the police have a little mystery on their hands to solve.

Here’s the statement from the Champaign Police Department, who have decided to delay the case.

''The Champaign Police Department agreed to investigate his assertions, as well as reexamine evidence available from the original traffic stop,'' the police statement said. 'The preliminary findings suggest that Mr. Davis' statements have sufficient credence that the Champaign County state attorney's office and the city of Champaign attorney's office have been contacted and asked to delay any further proceedings in this matter, until the Champaign Police Department completes a follow-up investigation.''

Davis was criticized for his character issues, which could stem somewhat from a stigma that comes with being the brother of San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis. It should be noted that Vernon has been on his best behavior since his altercation with Niners head coach Mike Singletary last season.

Many trigger-happy bloggers were quick to jump on the story involving Vontae Davis, but they’d be better off talking about who the hottest Dolphins cheerleader is before fingering a culprit who wasn’t even causing trouble. Davis isn’t a Dolphin in hot water, so let’s not hang him out to dry yet.
